The Forum

Governments across the globe have begun to invest in social innovation and social finance. From Ghana to Canada, and the United Kingdom to South Korea, governments are harnessing innovation to move the needle on complex social, economic and environmental challenges that matter to their constituents.

These remarkable investments in social innovation are enabling communities to respond to pervasive issues and or realize their aspirations more effectively than before. We are in the midst of a global renaissance in which we are collectively accelerating the growth of sustainable finance tools and connecting international communities of practice. This important local and international work is a unique and viable opportunity to unlock the private and philanthropic capital needed to tackle pressing challenges.

The inaugural SFWF23 - Sustainable Finance World Forum convened in Accra, Ghana December 10th – 12th 2023 was a three-day remarkable hybrid experience that brought together social purpose organizational leaders, social enterprise practitioners, policymakers, stakeholders in mission driven businesses, government, academia and civil society to discuss long-term and sustainable global prosperity. This three-day gathering advanced awareness of sustainable finance as a tool used since time immemorial in communities and cultures across the world. Sustainable finance is an expanding and remarkable global mechanism for social impact.

The world is at a crossroads.

A series of crises threaten the lives and livelihoods of millions of people across the globe. In the vast geographical, political, social and cultural space that the Global South represents, contradictions and complexities of various kinds converge. The fact remains a disproportionate priority of resources, thought leaders and practitioners in various sectors convene in the UK, Canada and the United States to make decisions and generate intellectual property at forums and conferences with a complete disregard for Africa, the birthplace of humanity. As a result social innovation and production in the past and present are sedimented in western mental models & mindsets. In this sense, conferences in the Global South organised by the Sustainable Finance World Forum are imperative and aim to balance the historical exclusion and disregard for colonized and so-called underdeveloped and emerging nations/markets. Our work at the SFWF seeks to open spaces for discussion and reflection on global social policies and their impact on social innovation, justice, access, inclusion, diversity and equity while centering the SDG’s and social transformation.

Sustainable finance has seen trillions of dollars of private sector capital being committed to net zero by 2050, there is also growing pushback against ESG frameworks internationally. We must collectively remain vigilant to innovate and develop practical solutions to regional, legal, political, and macro-economic barriers.

The SFWF24 will bring together leading practitioners, policymakers, regulators, and civil society organizations to examine and reflect on the latest developments in sustainable finance.
